History Of Rooted In Community

Youth involved in community gardens inspired the formation of the Rooted in Community National Network. These youth attended a variety of national conferences but did not find the support they needed. In response to this need, the American Community Gardening Association and the Food Project in Boston sponsored the first Rooted in Community Conference in 1999, bringing together forty-five youth food security activists with twenty-seven of their adult cohorts. The goal was to begin a conversation about building a national youth movement on food and the environment. Literacy for Environmental Justice in San Francisco joined the leadership team for the 2000 conference in San Francisco, which brought together almost 120 youth and adults for shared learning experience. The interaction of inner city and rural youth, youth of color and white youth proved inspirational to everyone in attendance.

We have held equally successful national conferences in Detroit, Gainesville, Milwaukee, Olympia, Washington, D.C. and most recently Little Rock, hosted by Dunbar Gardens. Youth plan and carry out these conferences with adult support and mentoring.
