1998

The Spark

Rooted in Community (RIC) was founded by ACGA, The Food Project, and Literacy for Environmental Justice.

1999

First National RIC Conference

The Food Project and ACGA host the first RIC Conference in Boston.

2000-2009

A Growing Volunteer Network

RIC expands through grassroots volunteer leadership and mentorship.

2010

Formal Leadership & Structure

RIC hires its first part-time Co-Directors and forms an Advisory Council.

2010 - 2019

National Youth Leadership

Hosts 20+ conferences and launches the Youth Food Bill of Rights.

2011 - 2012

Youth Food Bill of Rights

Drafted by youth and recognized by the Brower Youth Awards.

2020 - PRESENT

Summer Youth Leadership Summit

Our flagship four-day gathering brings youth from across the country together to build leadership, strengthen food justice campaigns, and connect through workshops, cultural sharing, and hands-on work.

Winter Leadership Institute (WLI)

A three-day peer learning space for adult allies and educators supporting youth-led food justice work — centered on reflection, relationship-building, and collective growth.
